Jan Elias Enterprises

Jan Elias is a retired antiques dealer and Master Cabinet Maker based in Dorking, Surrey, a town with a long association with the antiques trade.

Having completed an apprenticeship specialising in the restoration of antique furniture, Jan went on to establish his own business, focusing on the buying, selling and restoration of antique writing furniture. Over a career spanning more than 45 years, he handled over a thousand desks, including rare and important examples by celebrated makers such as Gillows of Lancaster.

Since retiring from the trade approximately ten years ago, Jan has maintained a personal collection of exceptional writing furniture, which he is now offering for sale.

At the LAPADA Berkeley Square Fair, Jan will present a selection of rare desks, including an exceptional mahogany serpentine partners desk by Gillows, dating to circa 1870. A fine example of Victorian cabinetmaking, the desk features intricately carved decoration, elegant serpentine curves and remarkable attention to detail throughout. Jan considers it the finest desk he has encountered in his 45 years in the antiques trade.
